Weaving courses on four-shaft and front-lever looms
Practical introductory weaving course to learn how a shaft loom works and acquire the basic principles of weaving – Level I
Course duration: 8 hours
Places available: 6
Programme: introduction to the loom and how it works; weaving a personal sample collection on pre-set looms; managing tension and draw-in; analysis of the main weaving faults; joining broken threads using a weaver’s knot.
Schedule: lessons may take place in a single day, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, or according to a schedule to be agreed with participants.
Cost: €80.00 per person, including teaching materials.
Practical introductory course in shaft-loom weaving: gaining confidence with weaving drafts, straight and point threading, tie-up and treadling – Level II
Course duration: 24 hours
Places available: 4
Programme: the course provides practical instruction in loom operation, warp calculation, warping, loom dressing, basic weave structures and their variations, drafting techniques and sample documentation.
Schedule: lessons may take place in one of the following ways:
– over a single week, from Friday to Sunday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm;
– on a weekly basis;
– according to a schedule to be agreed with participants.
Cost: €250.00 per person, including VAT and teaching materials.
Course participants will also have the opportunity to practise in the workshop on Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Frame-loom weaving workshop
In this workshop, you will learn the basic techniques of weaving on a small wooden frame loom. You will create a small tapestry, approximately 20 × 25 cm, using a variety of materials such as wool, fabric scraps, fabric or paper ribbons and natural elements.
At the end of the workshop, you will take your tapestry home with you, ready to hang or frame wherever you like.
The workshop is suitable for all levels and no previous experience is required.
All materials are provided by the Museum, but if you wish, you may bring your own wool or other materials to weave with.
